Joe Ruben Tanguma, II passed away on July 19, 2018. At the age of 43, he left this world too early, but his legacy as a loving son and brother, brilliant attorney, generous friend, and amazing father will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
Joe, or Joey, as he was known to family, was born on December 26, 1974, to parents Joe and Ruby Tanguma. Joey grew up in Bay City, Texas, where his parents were lifelong educators. As the big brother, Joey playfully tormented his younger brother David and doted on his little sister Sarah. He attended Holy Cross Catholic School and Bay City High School, where he was a stand out member of the swim team, and later coached young swimmers during his summers home from college. He remained close to many high school friends and was instrumental in organizing the annual alumni swim competition.
Joey attended The University of Texas at Austin for undergraduate studies and law school, and was a huge Texas Longhorn fan. After graduating from law school, Joey began his law practice representing public schools throughout Texas. Building on his passion for helping others and his deep respect for educators, Joey soon developed a reputation as one of the best school attorneys in Texas. He was named a Texas Rising Star and Texas Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly magazine, and a Bay City ISD Distinguished Alumni in 2014. He represented hundreds of school districts across Texas, argued cases in front of the Fifth Circuit United States Court of Appeal, and earned the respect of his clients and colleagues.
Joey was married for many years to Tessa Mason, and was grateful for her friendship after the marriage ended. He later married Jenny Wells and became Dad to her young daughter Caris. His heart was full a few years later when his daughter Josefina Ruby Tanguma (Josie) was born. Joey found his calling in being a father, and was the best dad two little girls could have. They were the light of his life, and his best qualities shine through in their laughter and smiles.
Joey was a loving and giving soul, full of humor, intelligence, and warmth. He left an indelible mark on those around him, and he will be deeply missed. He is remembered with love and joy by his parents Joe and Ruby Tanguma, brother David Tanguma, sister and brother-in-law Sarah and Steven Padilla, niece and nephew Adriene and Stevie Padilla, daughters Caris and Josie, and their mom Jenny, aunts and uncles and cousins, extended family, friends, and colleagues. He is preceded in death and welcomed into Heaven by his grandparents, aunts and uncle, and his beloved dogs Royal and Hank.
